Domenico Ghirlandaio

Pseudonym of the Florentine painter Domenico Bigordi (1449-1494). The artist, who was influenced by Giotto, Masaccio, Andrea del Castagno and Verrocchio, stands out for the perfection of his brush-stroke and the realism of images. Michelangelo, one of the aritsts symbol of Renaissance, was his disciple. In this representation of the Last Supper, in the background we find lemon trees, sign of salvation. Lemon, in fact, was considered a powerful remedy against poisons.

And in the christian tradition the image of this tree will often be associated with the one of Virgin Mary, not only because bright fruit with a sweet fragrance and pleasant shape, but also because rich in curative properties, not least that of being a remedy against poisons, redeeming...
