“Yellow” is an italian literary genre born in mid-nineteenth century (approximatively when Edgar Allan Poe published his “Murders in the Rue Morgue”, 1841) which deals with crime.

But what’s this genre’s name due to? It’s due to the famous Italian series conceived by Lorenzo Montano and published by Arnoldo Mondadori (1929), which had a yellow cover! Since then in Italy the word yellow has substituted the term thriller. There are several kinds of Yellow: detective story, spy story, noir and legal thriller.

This literary genre has then brought, with more and more success, crimes themes and detective investigations also on cinema and tv. Some examples of the most famous series which draw inspiration from “yellow” genre: The Signora in giallo, Italian translation of the famous American series Murder she wrote (do you remember the detective-writer Jessica Fletcher?), Inspector Derrick, Detective Colombo, Inspector Maigret (created from the great writer Georges Simenon) the legal pathologist Quincey, Don Matteo (Italian series also broadcasted abroad), Inspector Montalbano (inspired from the famous novels of Andrea Camilleri) and... CSI, the series with a worldwide record of audience, completely dedicated to the investigations of the American scientific police teams.

Yellow... curiosities!

› The Yellow Pages were the last pages of the American telephone directories containing commercial information and exactly yellow. In Italy they were introduced in 1966.

Yellow is the colour of China.

› In politics yellow is the colour or the Radical Parties.

› In many cities in the world taxis are yellow and also in Italy (until some years ago). The idea to distinguish cars intended for public transport with this colouur was of a New York taxi driver, Harry Alley. A case or a marketing strategy? Certainly a yellow car is more visible also in the midst of city traffic! On the other hand, also many school buses are yellow: this colour in fact makes them much more visible to anyone.
